Chelsea Removals Health and Safety Policy
Chelsea Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety in connection with our removals and relocation services, including packing, loading, transportation and unloading.
Our aim is to prevent injury and ill health, comply with applicable health and safety legislation, and promote a culture in which safety is an integral part of everything we do.
Health and Safety Objectives
We strive to achieve the following objectives across all domestic and commercial removal work:
Identify, assess and control risks arising from our removal operations, including manual handling, driving, use of equipment and work at customers premises.
Provide and maintain safe vehicles, tools, lifting aids and other equipment required to carry out moving tasks safely.
Ensure all employees are competent to perform their duties through appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision.
Promote safe systems of work that protect staff, customers and third parties at all stages of a move.
Continually improve our health and safety performance through monitoring, reporting and regular review of this policy.
Responsibilities for Health and Safety
The overall responsibility for health and safety within Chelsea Removals rests with the company management. They are responsible for ensuring that suitable resources are made available to implement this policy and that health and safety is considered in all planning and decision making.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation of safe working practices, communicating safety requirements to staff, and ensuring that removal crews follow agreed procedures and use the correct equipment.
All employees, including drivers, porters and packers, have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must cooperate with the company in meeting legal duties and follow all safety instructions, training and procedures.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Chelsea Removals undertakes suitable and proportionate risk assessments for its removal activities. These assessments identify significant hazards and define control measures to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Typical risks assessed within our operations include manual handling of furniture and boxes, moving items in confined spaces or stairwells, use of trolleys and lifting aids, vehicle movements, loading and unloading, and access to customer premises.
For each type of task, we develop safe systems of work which set out step-by-step procedures, safe lifting methods, required personal protective equipment and any special precautions. Staff are trained in these procedures and expected to follow them at all times.
Training, Information and Supervision
We provide health and safety training appropriate to each role within the company. This may include induction training, manual handling techniques, safe loading and securing of goods, vehicle safety, working at height when applicable, and use of specialist equipment.
Refresher training is provided periodically, particularly where risks are significant or where procedures have changed. Managers and supervisors ensure that staff have understood the training and are competent to carry out their duties.
Employees are given clear information about the hazards associated with their work, the measures in place to control those hazards, and the emergency procedures to follow in the event of an incident or accident.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a key part of our removals service and is managed carefully to minimise the risk of injury. Chelsea Removals seeks to eliminate hazardous lifting where reasonably practicable by using trolleys, dollies, lifting straps and other mechanical aids.
Where manual lifting is necessary, staff are trained to use correct techniques, work in teams for heavy or awkward loads, assess the route in advance, and avoid twisting, over-reaching or rushing. Items are packed and loaded to distribute weight evenly and maintain stability during transport.
All equipment used in our operations is maintained in a safe condition and inspected regularly. Defective tools or equipment must be reported immediately and taken out of use until repaired or replaced.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Our vehicles are maintained in accordance with manufacturers recommendations and relevant legal requirements. Pre-use checks are carried out by drivers, and any defects are reported promptly.
Drivers are required to hold the appropriate licence and follow all road traffic laws. They must drive safely and considerately, allowing for weather, traffic and road conditions, and taking regular breaks on longer journeys to reduce fatigue.
Loads are secured to prevent movement during transit, protecting both the goods being moved and other road users. Access points, ramps and tail lifts are used safely and according to training and instructions.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
When operating at customer locations, our teams take care to protect the safety of occupants, neighbours and members of the public. Routes are planned to minimise obstruction, and where necessary, temporary barriers or warning signs may be used to highlight hazards.
Care is taken when carrying large or bulky items through doorways, corridors and communal areas. Our staff aim to keep work areas tidy, avoid trailing cables, and promptly clean up any spills or debris that could create slips, trips or falls.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses and incidents, however minor, must be reported to management as soon as possible. This allows us to investigate causes, take corrective action and learn from events to improve safety in the future.
Emergency procedures are in place for dealing with incidents such as fire, injury, vehicle collisions or damage to property. Staff are briefed on these procedures and must follow them in the event of an emergency, including cooperating with emergency services where required.
Monitoring, Review and Policy Communication
We monitor our health and safety performance through incident records, feedback from staff and customers, and periodic inspections of working practices, vehicles and equipment. Where improvements are identified, we act promptly to implement them.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and updated when necessary, for example if there are changes in legislation, our operations or identified risks. The latest version is communicated to all employees and made available to customers on request.
By working together and following this policy, Chelsea Removals aims to maintain a safe and professional removals service for everyone involved.
